Swiss Christmas

Zurich is best known as one of the world’s largest financial centres, but this historical city does have a romantic side, and it is never more evident than at this time of year – with lights everywhere and a whole host of special events going on, this is a city that knows how to do Christmas.

To Do List
The Christkindli market in Zurich claims to be one of the biggest indoor markets in Europe, with approximately 15,000 visitors daily, over 160 stalls and a 50 feet Christmas tree decorated with 500 Swarovskii crystal decorations. If all that crystal isn’t enough luxury for you, hop over to the Bahnhofstrasse: the city’s biggest shopping street, and one of the most expensive and exclusive shopping locations in the world, which holds late night shopping events throughout December. One of the more interesting Christmas events on offer in Zurich is the “Singing Christmas Tree” at Werdmühleplatz, where different children’s choirs perform. Finally, check out one of the city’s Christmas circuses before you go home.

Zurich’s central Hauptbahnhof station embraces the festive spirit, decking its halls with bells and holly. Over 100 indoor market stalls tempt shoppers with colourful handcrafted trinkets, delicious St Nicholas pastries, gourmet chocolates, butter cookies and mulled Glühwein wine.
